March 24th marked the 60th anniversary of the NCAA championship game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the San Francisco Dons. Led by future NBA Hall of Famers Bill Russell and K.C. Jones, the Dons won easily 83-71. It was their second straight NCAA title. I bring this up because starting that day was one of the “Fabulous Five” for Iowa, Sharm Scheuerman. Sharm went on to coach Iowa, spent many years calling Hawkeye games on TV and radio, coached for Athletes in Action, and also started Basketball Club International or BCI.
I love the photo of Sharm getting his shot blocked by Bill Russell’s arm pit! The first time I saw this photo was with Sharm and his wife, Kathy, while having lunch in downtown Denver. Sharm and I traveled to Poland & Greece with Athletes in Action in 1989. It was his first foray back into coaching since the 60’s. It’s been nearly 6 years since Sharm “relocated” with the Lord but his legacy lives on in BCI. Be sure to tune in to our Court Side Live spree-cast tomorrow night at 9pm EST. I’ll be talking about hoops, faith, coaching influences, and more with 3 former pro athletes, including former Heisman trophy winner, Charlie Ward.
