This week’s tip comes from former Weber State head coach, Joe Cravens.
“Short term goals take care of long term goals. As in work hard TODAY or let’s have a great practice TODAY.”
I love where Joe is headed with this. Even though it sounds like a cliche, you really must live in the present moment. It’s impossible to live in the past or future. Your mind may spend a lot of time there, but you need do!
If you spend a lot of time thinking about long term goals (the future) but don’t take care of today’s short term goals (the present) you’ll never attain the long term goals. Want to start on the varsity team next season? Get in the gym today and work on your dribbling. Have a goal of hitting .300? Get in the batting cage for thirty minutes a day, starting today!
If you set short term goals that help you focus on action in the present moment, you will have a much better chance of achieving your long term goals.
Do you have a story of sticking to short term goals that led to long term goal success? I’d love to hear it. Feel free to email me or post it on my website. Have a great Memorial Day weekend and get out there to far away places like Maudlow, Montana. Check out the old schoolyard basketball court. Good luck fast-breaking on that surface!
